Comment: The great Derby della Lanterna. What more to say? This one has been top of my list for some time! High expectations and I was not disappointed. This one will definitely go down as one of my greatest football experiences ever. I arrived in Genova with train from Turin. It was midday and the match was still like 9 hours away. But the whole city was already buzzing. You could see people in Genoa and Sampdoria effects everywhere. To kill some time, I went to see the local minors Ligorna play Milano City in Serie D. At the match I met fellow groundhopper Noel from Switzerland. We grabbed some beer and watched the match, then headed back to the city center to get some food and some more beer! We were pumped up and ready for match!
Getting into Stadio Luigi Ferraris was a story in itself. It was not very organized and not really any controls. For instance their where not any bodysearch, so if you wanted to bring something into the stadium, that was surely no problem. Luigi Ferraris is one of those old stadiums from when Italy hosted the World Cup in 1990. It’s an amazing stadium with a lot of character. You can clearly see that not much has been done on it since it was completed in 1989.

The highlight was certainly the tifos prior to the match. Hats off for both sets of fans! Genoa celebrating their 125 anniversary with some spectacular choreography and Sampdoria fans firing up in their end. This was truly a high tempo encounter. Tackles flew in and passion was high both on and off the pitch. Sampdoria took the lead through the veteran striker Quagliarella, but Genoa answered with a penalty goal from the Polish striker Piatek (See video of goal below) In truth the match had more passion and atmosphere than quality football. But to be honest, that was as expected. After all, this is Derby della Lanterna! If you haven’t been here, you should certainly make the trip!
