On a rainy December afternoon, I made my way to the legendary El Sardinero stadium in the city of Santander in northern Spain. Racing Santander is one of the ten founding clubs of the La Liga and the main- and only professional football club in the Cantabria region. The club has no major rival. But the matches against the teams from the neighboring regions The Basque Country and Asturias are always tense. When I visited Racing, the club was in the bottom of the Segunda Division (2. tier). Real Ovideo was also struggling, but coming from the nearby Asturias region, this was probably as close to a derby that Racing could get.
The atmosphere was fantastic both prior to the match and during both halves. Both sets of fans made a good showing and really made it a great fan experience. Estadio El Sardinero is a classic stadium. Worn down, but with lots of history. On the pitch both teams fought for their lives. The effort and the passion were there all the way, but both sides lacked some quality. In the end, a draw was propbably a fair result on this rainy and windy night in Cantabria.
